Short answer: $15 to $20 at most big chains, and closer to $10 at a small independent. I have paid as little as $7 and as much as $20 for a single day.
I travel constantly and I buy day passes the way other people buy coffee. What follows is what I have actually paid, where, and the patterns that hold up across the country. Not a list scraped off websites, because half of them do not publish a price anyway.
What you will actually pay
| Gym | Where | Day pass |
| Community gym in a police station | Small town between Las Vegas and Santa Fe | ~$7 |
| Exercise Warehouse | Pittsburgh | $10 at the door |
| Small local gym | Rural Wyoming, heading to Yellowstone | $10 |
| Forum Athletic Club | Atlanta | $20, or $10 as a member’s guest |
| Elite Fit Labs | Near Dollywood, Tennessee | $20 day / $40 three days / $60 week |
| LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness and similar | Nationwide | around $20 |
Prices as of [month/year]. Always confirm at the desk.
The pattern: chains cost twice what independents do
This holds up almost everywhere I go.
Big chains run about $20. LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, the large regional players. They have a corporate rate, it does not move much, and the person at the desk cannot change it.
Small independents run about $10. Not the bodybuilding gyms, which price more like chains, but the ordinary neighbourhood gym in a small town. Exercise Warehouse in Pittsburgh was $10 at the door. A gym in rural Wyoming on the way to Yellowstone was $10. A community gym inside a police station in a town between Vegas and Santa Fe was around $7, which is the oddest and cheapest I have paid.
The practical consequence: if you are in a small town, you are probably paying half what you would in a city, and the gym is often better than the chain anyway. More free weights, less waiting, nobody cares what you are doing.

The guest rate nobody tells you about
This is the cheapest trick in the category and it is completely legitimate.
Most gyms charge less if you come in with a member. At Forum Athletic Club in Atlanta the walk-in rate is $20, but a member bringing a guest pays $10. Half price, and members are usually happy to do it because it costs them nothing.
Two people often get a discount too. Plenty of places will do $20 for the first person and $10 for the second rather than $40 for a pair. My wife and I have had this offered without asking more than once.
So if you know anybody who trains at the gym you are heading to, ask. And if you are travelling with someone, ask about a second-person rate before you pay twice.
Multi-day and weekly rates
Worth asking for, and usually cheaper per day than buying singles.
Elite Fit Labs near Dollywood does $20 for a day, $40 for three days, or $60 for the week. Buy three days rather than three singles and you save $20.
Weekly rates are common. Three-day rates are not. Most places have a day price and a week price and nothing in between, so the Dollywood three-day option was unusual. If you are somewhere four or more days, the week is almost always the better buy.
Always ask rather than assume. The posted price is often just the day rate, and the weekly rate exists but is not on the sign.
What about free day passes?
They exist and they are usually a sales tool rather than a gift.
Most large chains run free trial passes at some point, aimed at people who might join rather than travellers passing through. If you are in town for a week and willing to sit through a membership pitch, it can be worth it. If you have thirty minutes before a meeting, just pay the $20.
Worth knowing: a free pass often requires a local ID or proof you live nearby, precisely because they are trying to sell memberships rather than serve visitors. Offers change constantly, so check the chain’s current terms rather than trusting any article, including this one.
If you travel frequently, the better maths is a cheap national membership. A Planet Fitness Black Card runs around $25 a month and gets you into any location. At $20 a pass, it pays for itself in two visits. It is not my main gym, and it is not supposed to be.
How to actually find out the price
Websites are unreliable for this. Independents often do not publish a day rate at all, and chains bury it behind a location picker that wants your email first.
Call the gym. Thirty seconds, and you get the real number rather than a corporate placeholder. This is the only method that works consistently.
Ask about everything at once: the day rate, the weekly rate, the guest rate, and whether there is a second-person discount. Most places will not volunteer all four.
Check the hours while you are on the phone. A $10 day pass at a gym that closes at 8pm is useless if you land at 9.

What actually affects the price
Location. Small towns are cheaper, full stop.
Type of gym. Serious bodybuilding gyms price like chains even when they are independent, because they know what they have.
Whether they want members. A gym in a tourist town is used to visitors and has a real day rate. A gym in a residential suburb may not have thought about it and will sometimes just wave you in.
Hotel and resort gyms are a separate thing entirely, often $25 or more for non-guests, and usually not worth it versus finding a real gym nearby.
FAQ
How much is a gym day pass?
Usually $15 to $20 at a big chain and around $10 at a small independent. I have paid as little as $7 at a small-town community gym and $20 at chains like LA Fitness and 24 Hour Fitness.
Do gyms give discounts for guests of members?
Very often, and it is worth asking. Forum Athletic Club in Atlanta charges $20 walk-in but $10 for a member’s guest. If you know anyone who trains there, going in together halves the price.
Is a weekly gym pass cheaper than daily passes?
Almost always. One gym near Dollywood charges $20 for a day and $60 for a week, so four days or more makes the week the better buy. Ask for the weekly rate, since it is often not posted.
Can you get a free gym day pass?
Many chains offer free trial passes, though they are aimed at prospective members and may require local ID or proof of address. They are usually paired with a membership pitch. For a quick session while travelling, paying the day rate is often faster.
Is a gym membership cheaper than day passes for travel?
If you buy more than two day passes a month, yes. A national chain membership at around $25 a month pays for itself quickly compared with $20 a visit, and removes the hassle of finding somewhere each trip.
How do I find out a gym’s day pass price?
Call them. Websites frequently do not list day rates, especially at independents. Ask for the day rate, the weekly rate, the guest rate, and the closing time in one call.
Close
Budget $20 and you will rarely be surprised. In a small town, expect to pay half that and get a better gym.
The bigger point is that a day pass is almost always available, even in places where you assume it will not be. I have bought them in towns of under a thousand people. Asking costs nothing and it is usually the difference between training and not.
